What Filen Support Means on macOS
NetDrive added Filen to its provider list this release cycle, alongside Koofr, Files.com, ImageKit, and OpenDrive. Filen’s encryption happens on Filen’s side before data ever reaches NetDrive — that’s a property of the Filen service itself, not something NetDrive adds. NetDrive does not layer its own client-side encryption on top of any provider; it mounts what the provider already stores. Anyone treating the mounted drive as a general-purpose encryption tool should keep that distinction in mind — Filen’s account-level encryption is doing the work, not NetDrive.
NetDrive on macOS requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later as of version 3.18. Anyone still on Ventura or earlier needs to stay on NetDrive 3.17 until the OS is updated. Filen appears in the same provider picker as every other supported cloud, with no special configuration beyond a normal install.
Connecting Filen in NetDrive on macOS
- Open NetDrive → click Add a Drive in the drive manager.
- Select Filen from the provider list.
- Sign in with the Filen account credentials when prompted.
- Confirm the mount point NetDrive suggests, then click Mount.
No separate sync agent or installer is required — the Filen connection sits in the same drive manager as any other mounted provider, so it can run next to a Google Drive or S3 mount without extra setup. One Note on the First Mount
Like every provider on macOS, NetDrive relies on a one-time system extension to present a mounted volume to Finder. If Filen is the first cloud drive mounted on a fresh Mac, macOS prompts for a one-time approval of that extension in System Settings → Privacy & Security before the volume appears — click Allow, then remount. Anyone who’s already approved the extension for another provider (Google Drive, Dropbox, S3) won’t see the prompt again; it’s a per-machine approval, not per-provider. Working With Filen Day to Day
Once mounted, the Filen volume behaves like local storage from Finder’s point of view. Dragging a folder onto it queues a background upload instead of blocking the copy — visible in NetDrive’s upload tray — so a large batch of recordings doesn’t freeze Finder while it transfers.
Renames, deletes, and moves happen directly through the mount point, and NetDrive reflects the change back to the Filen account without a manual sync step. NetDrive also keeps a local disk cache — configurable from 100 GB to 1 TB — so reopening the same recording a second time skips a repeat download from Filen entirely. For a project that needs the volume reachable but untouched, any mounted drive can be set to read-only at mount time.
