A Mega drive that connected fine last week suddenly rejects every login attempt after two-factor authentication gets turned on for the account. The error usually reads as a generic authentication failure rather than anything mentioning 2FA directly, which sends people down the wrong troubleshooting path — re-typing the password, resetting it, anything except the actual cause. Fix 1: Check the System Clock

Mega’s two-factor codes are TOTP (time-based one-time password) codes — each one is only valid for a roughly 30-second window, calculated from the current time on both the authenticator app’s device and Mega’s server. If the Windows or macOS system clock has drifted, even by a minute or two, codes that look correct in the authenticator app can already be expired by the time NetDrive submits them.

To fix this on Windows: Settings → Time & Language → Date & Time, and confirm Set time automatically is turned on. On macOS: System Settings → General → Date & Time, and confirm Set date and time automatically is checked. Both should sync against a network time server rather than relying on the local clock’s drift correcting itself.

After confirming the clock is synced, generate a fresh code in the authenticator app and enter it right away rather than typing it from memory a minute later.

Fix 2: Re-Enter Credentials After Enabling 2FA

If a Mega drive was already configured in NetDrive before 2FA was turned on for that account, the saved login doesn’t automatically know to prompt for a code — it just fails outright. NetDrive needs the connection re-authenticated from scratch:

  1. Open Drive Manager and select the Mega drive.
  2. Click Edit, then re-enter the account email and password even if the fields already show saved values.
  3. Click Connect. NetDrive should now prompt for the two-factor code before completing the login.
  4. Enter the current code from the authenticator app and confirm.

If the edit dialog doesn’t prompt for a 2FA code at all, remove the drive entirely and add it again through Add a Drive rather than editing the existing one — a clean re-add avoids any leftover session state from before 2FA was enabled.

Fix 3: Confirm the Authenticator App Is Paired to the Right Account

Anyone managing more than one Mega account, or more than one cloud account in general, can end up scanning a 2FA setup QR code into the wrong entry in an authenticator app. The app will still generate codes — they just won’t match what Mega expects for this particular account. Open the authenticator app and check the label attached to the entry being used; it should show the Mega account’s email address. If it’s ambiguous or unlabeled, the safest fix is to disable and re-enable 2FA on the Mega account directly through Mega’s own web interface, generating a fresh QR code and re-pairing it clearly.
