Fix Filen Authentication Errors — NetDrive
Troubleshoot Filen sign-in failures in NetDrive: a password changed elsewhere, copy-paste whitespace, and account-side problems, with a clear order of checks.
A Filen drive that mounted fine last week now fails with an authentication error, or a new connection refuses a password that works in Filen’s web app. Before you reinstall anything, know that the cause is almost always the credentials NetDrive has saved, not the install. This guide goes through the checks in the order that resolves most cases fastest.

Keep Filen reachable as a drive
NetDrive lets Google Drive, OneDrive, S3, SFTP, WebDAV and more appear as native drives on Windows and macOS — no syncing, no full downloads.
- Browse Filen files in Explorer or Finder, no browser tab
- Update saved credentials in one place when a password changes
- Run Filen beside your other clouds in one drive manager

Match the Symptom to the Likely Cause
| Symptom | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| A drive that worked before now fails to connect | The Filen password was changed elsewhere and NetDrive still holds the old one |
| A fresh connection fails on the first try | A typo, or an invisible space or line break picked up while copying the password |
| Credentials look right but sign-in still fails | A problem on the Filen account side, or the service being unreachable from your network |
Work through the fixes in this order. Each takes under a minute, and the sequence avoids retyping a password that was never the problem.
Fix 1: Re-Enter the Password After a Change
NetDrive keeps the credentials you entered when you added the drive. Changing your Filen password in the web app, on another device, or through a reset does not update that saved copy, so the old password keeps being sent and keeps failing.
- Open NetDrive → go to the Drive Manager.
- Select the Filen drive and click Edit.
- Clear the saved password field and type the current Filen password.
- Reconnect the drive to authenticate again.

If a password manager fills the field, confirm it holds the new password and not the previous one. An outdated autofill entry is a common reason the same wrong password is submitted again and again.
Fix 2: Rule Out Copy-Paste Artifacts
A password pasted from a notes app, an email, or a manager can carry a trailing space or line break that the field never shows. To test it:
- Paste the password into a plain text editor and look at both ends for extra characters.
- Delete anything that is not part of the password.
- Type it directly into the NetDrive field instead of pasting, then connect again.
Check the email field too. A stray space after the address fails exactly like a wrong password and gives no hint about which field is at fault.

Fix 3: Confirm the Account Works Outside NetDrive
If the password is current and clean, sign in to Filen from a browser on the same network. That tells you whether the problem sits inside NetDrive or upstream:
- The Filen login also fails. The account is the issue. Reset the password through Filen, then update the saved password in NetDrive as in Fix 1.
- The Filen login works. Restart NetDrive, then edit the drive and reconnect. If a corporate proxy or firewall sits between you and the internet, try another network to see whether the connection is being filtered.
The error shown in NetDrive is generic, so a wrong password and an account problem look alike in the connection dialog. That is why the browser test is worth the extra step.
One point is easy to confuse: Filen is itself an end-to-end encrypted service, and that encryption belongs to Filen. NetDrive does not offer its own client-side encryption, so no separate NetDrive key or passphrase exists to enter or lose.

Prevent a Repeat
- Update NetDrive the same day you change the password. Make editing the drive part of the password-change routine.
- Keep one source of truth. Store the current password in a single manager entry so an old copy is never autofilled.
- Set Auto Mount deliberately. If the drive mounts at login or boot, a stale password fails at startup, so you notice sooner rather than halfway through a job.
Wrap-up
Most Filen authentication errors in NetDrive come down to a saved password that went stale or a hidden character in a pasted one. When neither applies, the browser test shows whether the account is the cause. For first-time setup, see Mount Filen on Windows with NetDrive or Mount Filen on macOS with NetDrive. The same stale-credential pattern shows up in Koofr authentication errors and OpenDrive authentication errors.
